Vintage Report

2016

Grown under a certifi ed organic programme (BioGro #5124) on our Estate. This was the seventh vintage made entirely on the Estate.

A dry mild winter meant the drought in the North Canterbury region persisted into spring. Fancrest Estate was untouched by the late spring frosts that lowered yields in some other vineyards in the valley. The drought was broken by heavy rainfall in January which helped the vineyard recover. A really hot summer turned wet and cool before harvest bringing out the best in cool climate Pinot Noir characteristics. The weather dried up in the runup to harvest, considerably reducing disease pressure in the final weeks.

Hand harvested; 100% destemmed without crushing into open top fermenters; wild ferment helped along only by gentle hand plunging; long, slow, post-fermentation maceration; maturation took place in a selection of quality tight grained French oak barriques (mainly Allier and Tronçaise), none new, for 18 months.

Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Contains no additions and no added sulphites. Bottled under screw cap in light-weight glass.
